  1. Well, that s a few hours I m never going to get back This title is from a first time novelist, so I didn t expect perfection But, God, it was bad Poorly developed characters who you absolutely don t care about, and then a weird segue into some kind of magical, horror story nonsense It was just ludacris and terrible and there are so many better books to choose Choose one of those.

  2. I tried so hard to like this book but I couldn t do it The premise was great but then it quickly became silly I mean really, being hypnotized by hair grease is ridiculous There were also way too many characters to keep up with, so the story became very confusing at times It was so hard to finish.

  3. I really wanted to like this book I bought it on the hype from WNYC s Alison Stewart I won t do that again The writing was good and the author s goal was understandable It was hard keeping track of the many characters and their motives A bit scattered But hair grease Come on now This should be categorized as fantasy science fiction Sorry, just thought it was stupid in the end.

  4. The book got a lot of hype, and I don t know why I was really looking forward to reading it, and now wish I hadn t wasted my time The story, and there really wasn t much story here, was ridiculous, repetitive, and boring The characters were unlikeable and one dimensional The plot made no sense I kept reading because I was hoping Ms Harris was going to pull it all together with some kind of revelation and surprise me That did not happen I don t even know what category to put this book underdystop [...]

  5. Although office politics have been written about many times many ways, this is a whole new approach It s irreverent and unexpected Nella has a coveted editorial assistant position at a publishing house in Manhattan where she is currently the only Black woman employed But not for long. She is trying to make an impression Not just with her boss, but the powers that be at Wagner Books where the diversity committee is merely a fa ade, at least to her all white colleagues Nella has an opportunity to g [...]

  6. I just started reading this book, which I swear only showed up recently, but I have a bit of a book fetish, so perhaps this little gem has been waiting patiently for my attention for a while No fear of spoilers I m only pages in Omg I was instantly hooked, page 1 Ms Harris has a voice, it is immediately apparent, and it is an interesting one, paired with skillful writing A sheer delight I am perhaps being hasty in posting a review 20 pages in, but I like it so much, I just had to tell someone Ha [...]

  7. Woes in corporate America for the Black woman gone side ways Akin to a Stepford Wives type of story Clever but showing signs of having been written too quickly.

  8. Kind of a literary version of Sorry to Bother You The writing, social satire, and observational humor is dead on I will be recommending this book to everyone

  9. Absolutely woeful book The premise of this book is ridiculous, the characters unlikeable apart from the narrators 2 friends who put up with her annoying incessant self indulgent chatter Plot holes are riddled throughout and never explained Please don t waste your time.

  10. Very confusing debut novel Initially I thought I was reading about the friendship between two black girls who are the only black employees at a publishing company Finding out about the first twist was enjoyable and led me to want to know , but by the time I got towards the end of the book and the very confusing actual end , I felt as if I was reading a different story altogether with a spy mystery theme I wish the author had stuck with one story or the other because for me, as a whole it doesn t [...]
