  1. Dune, at the time of writing this, is my favorite book ever So I decided to read the entire Dune series, using in universe chronology This is the earliest novel in the Dune timeline, only predated by the Hunting Harkonnens short story. This prequel, supposedly based on the late Frank Herbert s notes, tells the story of the Butlerian Jihad, the ancient war against the thinking machines Where Dune described this uprising as of a philosophical movement, about people rejecting automation and taking o [...]

  2. Set 10,000 years before the original Dune, The Butlerian Jihad is the first installment in a prequel trilogy that chronicles the war between humans and sentient machines. While Dune is a classic of the genre, it s well documented Frank Herbert, the original author, died before he could finish out his saga His son, Brian Herbert, took over and finished out the series and began filling out the universe his father created using his notes and original drafts As such, The Butlerian Jihad is not up to [...]

  3. I read all of Frank Herbert s Dune novels after over a decade of interest in the series The COVID 19 quarantine allowed me the extra time to pick the books up The universe is amazing and Frank Herbert was a superb writer with an exceptional imagination His writing style was thought provoking and poetic.I then started reading his son s and Kevin J Anderson s work and I noticed a sharp difference Their books are straightforward and action packed But when reading The Butlerian Jihad, I had a phenom [...]

  4. This is, quite literally, one of the worst books I ve ever tried to read When I was 5% into the book I stopped reading and went to roughly halfway into the book and then read five or six pages I jumped around within the book and read to be sure of my dislike and then I just stopped reading it completely Reading this book is a complete waste of time unless you are 9 to 13 years old I was very excited to see how various concepts and entities in Dune originated but the writing of this book is so ba [...]

  5. I recently re read Dune, which has aged well Wanting information on the Dune background, I read House Atreides, and was impressed w the writing Not so w the Butlerian Jihad.Although it gave me needed historical information on the Dune universe, the writing was uneven The Arakeen chapters were well dune, but those dealing with Earth were poorly written and I ended up skimming past a lot of the filler BS I want to read the rest of the book in the series, and am hoping the 2nd and 3rd books in this [...]

  6. I am reading through the Dune saga in chronological order thus started with the Butlerian Jihad I enjoyed the story and it had some fascinating points As a story in its own right I thought it was very good, it moved along at a good pace and whilst it is very definitely science fiction it does not overdo the science to point where you struggle to understand it I liked the main characters even some of the Titans who were obviously the bad guys and even the interaction between humans and the thinki [...]

  7. Sorry, but I tried and gave up.Would have loved this to be able to fill in back stories and wanted to like th book, but the writing was simply un engaging in my opinion, so will not by trying any.
