  1. The first Cork O Connor mystery introduces him to audiences and tells an entertaining story about secrets hidden in a small Minnesota town Cork is part Anishinaabe Indian, has friends and mentors in the tribe, but has been the sheriff of Aurora enforcing white men s laws After a confrontation between whites and natives that caused him to kill a white resort owner, he lost a recall election He has been deeply grieving which caused him to lose his marriage.Cork has started a new relationship with [...]

  2. This is not a review of the content of the book, rather of the Atria Paperback 20th Anniversary edition printed in 2019.This is the worst printed paperback I have ever seen The paper is soft and grayish, not crisp and white, it is unpleasant to touch and hold The ink is extremely uneven It varies between too light and faded, to too dark and blurred to a bold font. This is a good book that deserves a better printing I cannot recommend this edition.

  3. Damn this is a good book Hard to believe it s his first effort Well done William When I wasn t reading this book, I was thinking about it and wishing I was Slowed my reading down at the end to make it last longer Good stuff.

  4. All the rave reviews by many of my favorite authors Lee Child, CJ Box, Craig Johnson made me think this will be a can t miss series and get me through the pandemic I was kind of disappointed Cork is not a strong character, doesn t have a real job, bizarre interaction and mostly at odds with the sheriff who replaced him Small town politics is trite His relationships with women are bizarre The native American spirituality and mysticism seems rather contrived Pretty good climax, but once there s on [...]

  5. I left Central Wisconsin 56 years ago but was painfully reminded of the harsh winter climate when reading this novel set in Minnesota Add in the early morning paper route one of the young characters was responsible for which required newspapers to be delivered during all kinds of weather Another similarity was that both of us were Eagle Scouts and members of the Order of the Arrow And then of course we had a hunting cabin or tar paper shack is a better description just on the other side of a bog [...]

  6. I hate this book Violent and contrived After he kills a dog for no reason, I was done So predictable I realized she was a woman who knew how to take care of herself Can you guess what happened to her

  7. A friend sent me the list of Williams books and said she was certain I would like them.I dobeen reading non stop and am on 5 at present. They are full of mystery and also Indian folk lore SUPER fun.

  8. I decided to try this series after reading and enjoying Ordinary Grace The bonus short story made the politics of the main character clear and this was totally unnecessary I had already guessed I don t read mysteries to hear about politics so I won t be reading in the series.

  9. My initial interest in this book was twofold I am always up for a murder mystery and I enjoy learning about different places and cultures whilst reading a novel Iron Lake delivered on both counts, the murder mystery slowly and inexorably becoming involved, leaving plenty of opportunity for some satisfying and believable characterisation, an added bonus on top of the meticulously researched native American angle The descriptions of the beauty and harshness of the Minnesota winter are stunning, as [...]

  10. Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the stand alone novel Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger, I decided to read this, the first of his Cork O Connor mystery series I was a little disappointed Very well written, as before, for some reason I didn t enjoy this as much Of course, this is a different genre a thriller, rather than something as thoughtful, sensitive and thought provoking as OG.The series is based in and around the town of Aurora, Minnesota where Native American culture and history a [...]
