The writing style is what collected all of us to this novel Ms Harmel is a true story teller She captures your attention through simple but normal situations that create a reaction of each person in the story You get to like and enjoy each person as they become part of the twists and turns in this family secret WWII story The focus is on the granddaughter of a survivor of Paris in the early days of the Nazi occupation The grandmother is in last days suffering from the loss of her memory with a f [...]

  3. I ordinarily do not read the acknowledgements but this time I did and I m so glad Kristin Harmel acknowledges the miracle that was realized through Harry Landrith, a real life hero if there ever was one She models the character of Jacob on this remarkable man Like Harry Landrith look him up on google Jacob was a holocaust survivor whom we are privileged to meet as the story reaches it s conclusion It is a fairy tale and fairy tales were the means that Mamie told the secrets of her life to her gr [...]

  4. I am shocked at all the 5 stars this book has received I found the writing the plot and the characters to be sub par The main character Hope is a whiny all about me type Hope s daughter is an insult to teenagers everywhere The plot is like many nowadays with an elder in the family telling the younger ones about the Resistance and WWII This book is just not good The writing was difficult it did not flow You never really got into the characters as a matter of fact you will find increasing frustrat [...]

  5. I thoroughly enjoyed this book The millions of Jewish lives lost and all the horrific suffering and after effects will make you cry One survivor s many losses closed her heart for the rest of her life affecting both her daughter and granddaughter Incredibly, though, she was able to teach then to open their hearts to love at the end of her life Beautifully written and highly recommended

Wow Not sure if I can put into words how much I loved this book I read it in less than 2 days It about a grandmother who lost her true love over 70 years ago in France when the Germans was gathering up the Jewish ppl and taking them to concentration camps The granddaughter is given the task by her grandmother to go to Paris and find out what happened to her family Be sure and have your tissue handy for the last few chapters Loved, LOVED it

  7. It took me awhile to finish this book, primarily because the beginning part of the book starts out on Cape Cod with her daughter and the bakery and wasn t really all that interesting I kept putting it down and then not really wanting to pick it up again That all changed when I got to the section where she went to Paris The story from that point on captivated me and made up for the beginning of the book I guess like I felt like the beginning of the book just didn t have the depth that the story d [...]

  8. The writer has an easy writing style and I was rooting for our protagonist from the first page I could envision the locations Cape Cod to Paris and didn t want to leave them Add in bakery recipes and I found myself quite satisfied Fascinating story I found myself googling the organizations to see if the historical facts presented were true they were.My book club really enjoyed it Go ahead and read it

  9. A lovely novel, that kept me in suspense making it impossible to put down It is well written and I warmed to the characters as the book went on The stories revolving around aushwitz are just horrifying and heart breaking Having only read the tattooist of auschwitz a few months ago it was fresh in my head Perhaps that is what gave this book an added enhancement and was so captivating and heart wrenching at the same time.I Definitely would recommend it, it s well worth read.

  10. I cant agree about this book being a page turner by any meansFor me, it would ave been far better if less wordy and repetitive how many times did we read about Jacon and Rose s first encounter I could have lived without the recipes and scan read many pages without losing any information or plotas for running round France tracing recipes as though this was the one single key to such a mystery I still cant fathom how a young girl whose family has been lost to the gas chambers would be so enthralle [...]
