  1. If you are new to Stoicism, as I am, this is not the first book you want to get.The first books to read are the books about the general principles of Stoicism There are quite a few out there. Then, when you are familiar with the simple, basic principles of Stoicism, this book fits in beautifully as does The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius. As a philosophy of life, Stoicism has changed my life It makes so much sense Especially, to let things go of which you have no control.I could go on and on, but [...]

  2. After reading this book, I found the translator is absolutely correct Stoicism is not what our culture takes it to be It is not about being emotionless, it is about applying one s efforts in areas where we can actually accomplish something, most notably our internal reaction to worldly events It is worth reading this book, just to get the definition correct. But, the book is than a lesson in terminology It is teaching us how to live While reading this book, it became obvious to me that Stoicism h [...]

  3. When the student is ready the teacher will appear I wish I had this book when I was younger I am learning to put this book into practice Not easy, but it can be done Looking to learn your place in this crazy world Looking to learn what is within your control and not Looking for inner harmony If you are willing to work for them this book is for you

  4. Torode Makes Stoicism Accessible In this quick and easy to digest Manual , you ll find answers, challenges, and reflections Yes, you can read it straight through, but it s better to take a chapter and meditate on the meaning and figure out how to apply the teaching to various aspects of your life. That is why serious students of philosophy and psychology will read and reflect People who don t want to evolve will find this to be common sense it s not and will simply read this and complain Which on [...]

  5. I have picked up several translations of Arrian s wonderful tribute to his teacher over the years and this one is my new favorite The clear and modern language makes it easy to share with kids of all ages, a huge plus in my eyes.It s never to early to start learning how to live effectively.

  6. This is a great book The author translates these very old writings into something we can understand clearly and also captures the essence of Epictetus teachings Much wisdom here I highly suggest you check it out.

  7. I don t endorse tobacco use, but I have smoked a lot in my past Meditations by Marcus Aurelius translated by George Long I walk away after reading a few pages light headed, and everything is different If you desire Wisdom and Grace, and seek the Truth in all things you have to be ready for the hit it will fill your soul with. The Manual didn t have the level of Awe and Wonder I love from my studies I read it in one sitting. Is the glass half empty or half full I have water. The Manual was a dixie c [...]

  8. Excellent, concise guide for living Great introduction to writings of Epictetus, and to Stoic philosophy Every maxim may not apply to all individuals, but regardless of personal beliefs, one will very likely find this guide adaptable applicable to their daily mode of being. Many thanks to Sam Torode for putting this manual into clear, easy to understand language It was a great quick read and I look forward to re reading, as well as reading Book 2 in the series, The Meditations A Philosophers Guid [...]

  9. A good reminder in exercising self awareness and control if you ever get overwhelmed by life.As we say in Ireland, What is for you will not pass you by Stoic philosophy, the core idea is staying within your own circle of influence and over stretching into areas where you are weak. And letting go of that materialistic backstabbing rat race mentality.

  10. As an introduction to Stoic principles it does a great job It is both well written and easy to read.
