  1. The story of code breaking in WWII is much simpler and easier to understand than in WWI, which this book is all about.English Admirals, towns, major players in the code room ,names of ships both English an German are thrown around and the English countryside all play an important role But for an American it s way to complicated to completely understand.I did glean several pertinent facts about how code breakers ,then in its infancy, made many mistakes by keeping information learned about the enem [...]

  2. The World War One efforts at codebreaking didn t seem to be important to the commanders who should have valued the information in the field Or maybe the personalities involved bottlenecked the data for personal reasons At least these problems were solved before World War Two The story was told pretty well and could have benefitted from some kind of organizational chart at least to this ignorant non veteran.

  3. One of the most important breaking points in World War II was the discovery of the German code in a classified bunker in Bletchley Park, England This code helped the allies win World War II.However, the code breakers did not just appear They started in room 40 of the Royal Navy Admiralty headquarters during WWI.A good read for World War II history fans Not so much for every day readers.

  4. The author did as well as anyone could given the slender source materials. The British had a code breaking outfit in World War One that did quite well with little than pencils and paper At the end of the war, it seems all the records were destroyed and few of those involved left memoirs We simply do not have much to go on.The author does the best he can He frankly imagines what might have or must have happened because no descriptions of these very secret operations survived.I am glad I read this [...]

  5. This was a great book about the early code breakers I have been very interested in what they did I hope I can find books on code breakers and Enigma.

  6. Was a story of people, places and codes How codes were gotten , unraveled and then kept so private them were almost useless It took a certain combination of persons to go from WWI to WWII and to bring that knowledge forward.

  7. Many details on the mysterious Room 40 in the Admiralty have been lost, but David Boyle has put together a fascinating history of what is known in early signals intelligence and cryptography that would lead the way toward Bletchley Park, and Alan Turing s battle with Enigma This short history focuses on some of the key players in WWI British Naval Intelligence working on code breaking, and the successes and missed opportunities during the war Recommended read

  8. Many interesting anecdotes, but a little hard to follow It seems to me this book is a synthesis of several others on the subject.

  9. Where do I start to criticise this little book I have never read another book by David Boyle and never will after sampling this effort The author seems to ramble around and put no meat Jutland covered in a few pages on the subject except repeated references to Enigma from 20 years later Admittedly Enigma has been sexed up over the last few years with films and books aplenty, so Boyle has tried to jump on this bandwagon with his title and continued references.A few pictures inserted into this sli [...]

  10. A relatively short book that generally seems to repeat Room 40 s exploits that are already published in other, earlier accounts, rather than introduce completely novel research results but that s hardly surprising given the paucity of primary documentation and the passage of time. What it does do, however, is consistently compare and contrast the approach followed in Room 40 with that later used at GC CS, without belittling the achievements made in either time or place As such, an interesting per [...]
