  1. Was pleasantly surprised by the author s careful treatment of the sensitive topic of slavery Very well done I enjoyed this book immensely Fast read, hard to put down, fantastic prose it s obvious she spent a great deal of time researching Jamaican history I will definitely recommend to friends.

  2. I enjoyed learning about some of the history of Ireland and Jamaica I never knew about their relationship Easy to tell an amazing amount of research went into this book. The only reason I dropped one star is the 25% of the book got quite confusing Things jumped from one time period to another and back again then to yet another one Was difficult to keep up with. The ending did tie everything up nicely.

  3. I loved the first half of the book with all the historical period of the 1800s but the second half I just found confusing I couldn t wait to just finish it and move on I wanted to see how it ended but it seemed long and drawn out and switched back and forth from the 1990s to the 1930s was confusing for me.

  4. I love historical books, fiction and non fiction Too few people know what the Irish suffered as indentured servants slavery Life can be brutal but there are those who somehow survive Irish history grabs your heart and, at times, breaks it.

  5. When a book grabs you in the first few pages it becomes part of you and tugs on your heartstrings The Tide Between Us does just that Ms Collins artfully crafted characters and colorful descriptions of each setting made reading so easy She has taken a little known history, filled it with compelling characters and transported you to a different time and place Loved it Can t wait for her next book to come out

  6. I admit to reading this book twice The first time I missed some of the family connections, so read carefully This book immerses the reader in the time period and culture , first of Jamaica, and later in Ireland At the same time you become involved with many of the characters A new but if history hidden from view

  7. It s easy to see that Ms Collins did a substantial amount of research in writing this novel As a descendant of an early Irish emigrant to Jamaica from Tipperary, albeit under slightly different circumstances as far as I can gather since they owned property from the early 1700 s, the story held my interest throughout This is the first time however that I heard of keeping snakes in a house to eat rats I would have preferred cats myself.

  8. Full of passion, pain and reality Historical novels like this one need to be believable and ring true to the times and locations The Tide between us delivers both, plus the chracters are staunchly three dimensional An entertaining and satisfying read for both history buffs as well as those intrigued by human nature.

  9. This book is written in a readable style and is what I would term a quick read I found it interesting as I was not aware that indentured children were sent to the Caribbean to work on the plantations from Ireland The early part of the book is a story of slavery while Part 2 brings readers to the 20th century and deals with some of the repercussions of the earlier story This is not a work of literary brilliance but I am pleased to have read it as it gives yet another perspective on the effect of [...]

  10. I ve read late into the night many a night to get to the next bit I got totally absorbed by the characters and the reality of what was happening Brilliant research and writing took me back to what it must have been like living in those times.
